Eva Greene of Wick and Greene Fine Jewelers in Asheville, NC, sent me this photo today of a small card they have placed in their diamond case as part of my suggestion to suggest gift ideas through signage in the cases. The card promotes a particular solitaire from their ForeverMark collection as Gift Idea #1. There are about 12 other “Gift Ideas” spread throughout the other cases in the store signed similarly. It took 1 minute to create the sign and another 2 minutes to wrap a box next…

Some retailers have so much merchandise in their cases, the nicer pieces get lost in all the clutter. Remove all the inventory you’ve had in the case for over a year (or at most 18mos) and make it easy on your customers to find something they really like. They aren’t going to buy that stuff or they already would have. They will thank you with their purchases of popular, current, saleable stock. Bring out the “old stuff” if they ask to see more.  Studies show, people give up after looking…

I happened to go into the local Lowe’s home-improvement store last night. The main aisle was filled with Holiday gift ideas all lined up. Wooden birdhouse kits for the kids, tool boxes, saws, all kinds of items all lined up, with special signs suggesting these choices as great gift ideas. Price points ranged from $8 to over $100. A clueless shopper did not have to wander all around the store looking for the “right” gift, Lowes had done that for them and identified these items as great gift…

“The word ‘mentor’ comes from Homer’s poem, The Odyssey.  When the king goes off to fight the Trojan War, he leaves the kingdom in the hands of a trusted counselor named Mentor.  Mentor actually teaches and raises the king’s son.” For many retail jewelers, their business is their “baby.” When you are fighting your own battles, it is good to know that your baby is in good hands.

Everyone seems to want to know the “Hot” new colors for Spring. Here is a link to an article with the official word. Just remember, before you redo all your displays in these “hot” colors, they will be “not so hot” 6 mos later when the new batch is introduced. You might be better off going with basic colors and accenting in the newest ones. http://www.nationaljeweler.com/fashion/archived.shtml?article=Pantone-reveals-palette-for-spring-2014-31704.xml
